U.S. House of Representatives to hold hearing on preventing surprise billing

Democrats and Republicans finally agree on something. Surprise medical bills are out of hand and need to be addressed. A landmark hearing is expected to take place, Tuesday, April 2, in the House of Representatives regarding surprise billing. Congress, according to an article in Vox, will “explore the scope of the problem and what types of policy solutions would be best to fix it.”[1]

Over 14 percent of Americans have receiving a surprise bill. Becker’s Hospital Review reports that “About 1 in 7 patients received a surprise bill in 2016 after being treated by an out-of-network healthcare professional at an in-network facility.”[2] For its study, Health Care Cost Institute examined approximately “620,000 in-network inpatient admissions and associated professional claims (both in- and out-of-network claims filed by the physician or other healthcare professional who provided care) in 37 states and Washington D.C. in 2016.”[3]

While surprise billing has been a topic for state legislators, this is the first time that we know of Congress getting involved. The hearing comes on the heels of President Trump discussing the need to end surprise bills during Jan. 23, 2019 roundtable at the White House, where he “talked about the ‘big [sticker] shock’ that comes with surprise medical bills.”[4] The president said patients “should know that the real price – and what’s going on with the real prices of procedures.”[5]
