U.S. House of Representatives to hold hearing on preventing surprise billing
Democrats and Republicans finally agree on something. Surprise medical bills are out of hand and need to be addressed. A landmark hearing is expected to take place, Tuesday, April 2, in the House of Representatives regarding surprise billing. Congress, according to an article in Vox, will “explore the scope of the problem and what types of policy solutions would be best to fix it.”
Over 14 percent of Americans have receiving a surprise bill. Becker’s Hospital Review reports that “About 1 in 7 patients received a surprise bill in 2016 after being treated by an out-of-network healthcare professional at an in-network facility.” For its study, Health Care Cost Institute examined approximately “620,000 in-network inpatient admissions and associated professional claims (both in- and out-of-network claims filed by the physician or other healthcare professional who provided care) in 37 states and Washington D.C. in 2016.”
While surprise billing has been a topic for state legislators, this is the first time that we know of Congress getting involved. The hearing comes on the heels of President Trump discussing the need to end surprise bills during Jan. 23, 2019 roundtable at the White House, where he “talked about the ‘big [sticker] shock’ that comes with surprise medical bills.” The president said patients “should know that the real price – and what’s going on with the real prices of procedures.”
Medical costs are so high and pervasive that healthcare is shaping up to be the big issue of the 2020 election. People are tired of not knowing what their out-of-pocket will cost. And worse, is someone thinking he or she is in-network, only to get a “surprise” bill from a 3rd party. Almost 20% of ER visits include treatment from an out-of-network doctor. People go to their “in-network” hospital and still get bills from providers that their insurance won’t cover.
While Congress debates what to do about surprise billing, you can remedy this issue today. HealthQRS provides a technology solution that allows you to bundle payments so that your patients aren’t surprised. Our solution also has built-in rules to ensure that patients stay in-network.
In addition, you can use HealthQRS to market your facility. Our solution provides an “Amazon” type of shopping experience to your existing patients and helps you market yourself to new ones. You can use our platform to help you partner with employers. You can become a center of excellence. You can literally transform your business model and keep people happy with no surprises.
HealthQRS allows patients to see what their actual out-of-pocket expenses will be before they schedule services. Not estimates. Actual prices.
How do we do this?
Our solution is built with complicated algorithms that use real-time data: the actual payer contracts by provider + insurance verification information + charity + other business rules to provide consumers with a true out-of-pocket per patient per procedure.
HealthQRS is not a portal. Think of it like Expedia for healthcare. It is an expansive system that works behind the scenes to provide you with a way for people to search for providers and services in network, access quality scores, see the actual out-of-pocket expense, select a provider and service, schedule appointments, pay in full or at least set up payment plans and even arrange transportation. All from an app on their smartphones.
HealthQRS allows you to offer an entire online retail experience with one, easy-to-use platform. HealthQRS is an e-commerce platform that you can brand for your company or hospital and that will keep employees in-network. Our ecommerce platform gives people a full, rich retail experience in healthcare. When they login to the app on their smartphones, tablets or PCs, they see your logo and they think you are providing this experience. And you ARE providing the experience … HealthQRS is providing the platform.
HealthQRS’ ecommerce platform provides a true retail experience for the user. HealthQRS has developed the only complete e-commerce platform for healthcare on the market. This retail experience creates a mutually satisfactory partnership for hospitals and employers and employees. HealthQRS allows employers and employees to do business with hospitals and actually complete the financial portion of the transaction from the app.
