Seema Verma creates “#WheresThePrice” twitter campaign to verify which hospitals are publishing prices

We checked a hospital’s website in southern Indiana and could not find published prices. We actually had to type the word “chargemaster” in the search bar. Then we were taken to a location on the site (not visible at first glance or even by using drop down menus) that instructed us to download the file that contained the chargemaster.

CMS chief, Seema Verma, has developed a “#WheresThePrice” price transparency challenge, and she is asking what she calls “Twitterverse” to search their local hospital’s website to see if they can find published pricing. According to an article in Becker’s Hospital Review, Verma tweeted the challenge on January 18, 2019:

‘”As our latest #PriceTransparency initiative begins to take effect, we’re asking the Twitterverse to help us make sure patients have access to the basic hospital pricing information (called the chargemaster) that is now required to be posted online,’ she wrote.

“Ms. Verma’s tweet was accompanied by an image that reads: ‘Here’s the challenge: Visit the website of your local hospital. If you can’t find their pricing information posted in an electronic format, let me know. Send me a tweet with the hashtag #WheresThePrice and help us drive #PriceTransparency!’”[2]

According to Becker’s article, the “rule has faced criticism from some hospitals. Since provider negotiations with insurance companies aren’t factored in to the information posted online, it doesn’t provide insured patients with an accurate picture of their expected out-of-pocket costs, they argue.”[3]

Hospitals are right. Insured patients need to understand what their out-of-pocket costs will be. Chargemaster lists don’t show that. CMS has the right intent with the price transparency rule. But the rule would be much more beneficial if actual out-of-pocket prices were published.
